Central George Town was the location for the last Expat–IWA Penang Mingle held before the summer exodus. It was a lovely evening at the atmospheric Penaga Hotel, at the corner of Clarke and Hutton. The Penaga was one of the first of the heritage boutique hotels to open after the granting of World Heritage status for Penang and it has been lovingly and eclectically restored.
It was interesting to see faces both familiar and new. Several IWA Board members attended, as the Mingle is given as a joint venture with the IWA. But there were quite a few new people as well, reflecting the fact that Penang International is growing and expanding its readership beyond the traditional confi nes of the expat community.
Chef Haroon served up a truly mouth-watering selection of canapés including: Crab Salad with Mayonnaise and Honeydew, BBQ Chilli Prawn on Harissa Potatoes, Mini Burger Patties with onion marmalade, Grilled Chicken Skewers with Leek, Mushroom Quiche, Spinach and Cheese Phyllo Rolls. The wine, exceptional as always, was supplied by The Wine Shop. Beer and soft drinks were also available.
A highlight of the evening was the visit by Augustin Supriata from Indonesia, was having a show in the hotel at the same time and Mingle guests were invited to see his work and meet the artist. He is one of the Penaga’s artists-in-residence.
There were several “lucky dip” prizes. John and Wilma Bunk had very kindly donated one of their beautiful shell necklaces. They collect shells and small objects during their beachcombing or jungle walks and craft them into one of a kind necklaces, earrings and hair ornaments. Josh Lee donated several bottles of his new George Town perfume. It is a unisex perfume based on the smells of the spices which are so much a part of the Penang Story. Tanamera, the recently renovated spa at the Penaga, gave each guest a gift bag of goodies to take home.
