The ranking, according to Tourism Malaysia Deputy Director-General (Promotions) Chong Yoke Har, comes at an auspicious time for the country as Malaysia is all set for Visit Malaysia Year 2014.
“We are elated with this ranking by one of the travel industry’s most authoritative publications.
“The VMY 2014 campaign will be the country’s fourth Visit Malaysia Year, and is estimated to attract 28 million tourists to the country, reaping RM76 billion in tourist receipts.”
According to Lonely Planet, Malaysia is “rolling out an array of new attractions.” This is in reference to Legoland Malaysia, the Hello Kitty family theme park, the Gaya Island Resort on Pulau Gaya in Sabah and the newly-opened Melaka Bird Park.
Based on the list, Malaysia is the only Asian country to have made it to the top ten list. The top three destinations are Brazil, Antarctica and Scotland.
