What have Malaysians searched for the most on Google this year? From celebrity scandals, world events and local dramas, below is a list compiled by google on this year’s major events and hottest trends based on searches conducted in Malaysia.
Malaysia’s Trending Questions 2013
1) Lahad Datu
The Lahad Datu incident took place early this year. On the 11 of February 2013, a group of local fisherman came across quite a large group of armed men setting up base in KampungTandou in Sabah. The fisherman, suspecting something was amiss, reported their findings to the police. The intruders began breaking up into smaller groups, and separating over several areas around Lahad Datu. The grouped identified themselves as the Royal Army of the Sulu Sultanate from southern Philippines.

2) Smartphone Rebates
The smartphone rebates given by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission was the second most searched for topic in 2013. Youths between the ages of 21 and 30 can apply for a RM200 rebate to purchase selected 3G smartphones from registered dealers in Malaysia within a certain time frame.
3) Results of Malaysia’s 13th General Elections
The result of the 13th General Elections which took place this year was the third most searched for topic on Google with many Malaysians and foreigners on the lookout for every small development.

4) Setia Hujung Nyawa
A local drama titled ‘Setia Hujung Nyawa’ was widely searched for on Google by Malaysians. The drama centres on the life of the main character when his life changes after being jilted by his fiancée a week before their wedding.
5) Gwiyomi
Gwiyomi is a title of a Korean song by a South Korean singer called Hari. The single was released on 18 February, 2013.
6) Teduhan Kasih
Teduhan Kasih is another popular local drama. It tells the story of a couple in love and the troubles they face in their marriage with each other.
7) Malindo Air
Malindo Air is an airline based in Malaysia. It is a joint venture between the National Aerospace and Defence Industries of Malaysia and Lion Air of Indonesia. The name ‘Malindo’ was derived from the names of both respective countries; Malaysia and Indonesia. The airline was founded in September 2012 and was launched in Malaysia in March 2013.

8) WeChat
WeChat is a text and voice messaging communication service available for mobile phones. This app is available on all Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Phone and Symbian devices. The app provides users with multimedia communication with text messaging, hold-to-talk voice messaging, broadcast messaging, photo/video sharing, location and contact information sharing.
9) The Conjuring
The Conjuring is a horror film released July this year. The chilling storyline is based on true stories by world renowned paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorrraine Warren. In this particular story, they tell their experience of how they were called to help a family whom were terrorized by a dark and sinister presence in their home.
10) Cinta Jannah
Cinta Jannah is yet another local drama. The drama stars popular local actors and actresses such as AerilZafrel, NelydiaSenrose, Reen Rahim, Ramona ZamZam, FadilahMansoor, SaharuddinThambay, Dian P Ramlee, Kartina Aziz, EzanyNizariff, Abdul Fattah and many more.
Malaysia’s Trending People 2013
1) Paul Walker
Fast and Furious actor Paul Walker died in a car accident recently. The 40 year old actor and a friend were on the way to a charity event for victims of Typhoon Haiyan when their car, a Porsche Carrera GT, driven by Paul’s friend, crashed into a light pole and tree and caught on fire. Both were declared dead at the scene. Walker was also in the midst of filming for the seventh edition of Fast & Furious.
2) Tegar
Tegar is a 12 year old Indonesian boy who is also a singer. He is well-known for being a street busker.
3) Mat Yo’s Wife
A local footballer, Mat Yo, was in the spotlight recently thanks to his wife. A video which went viral showed the footballer’s wife insulting a security guard while he stood aside without intervening.
4) Sharifah Zohra Jabeen
Sharifah Zohra Jabeen is the president of Suara Wanita 1Malaysia. She created a huge controversy due to her controversial speech during a student forum. Her rant (“Listen, Listen, Listen”) went viral and created a whole host of parodies after the recording of her speech went viral. The video also produced a few “memes” on Facebook as well as YouTube parodies.
5) Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela passed away on 5 December, 2013, after suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection. He was 95. His death was announced by President Jacob Zuma.
6) Jackie Chan
Jackie Chan is a Hong Kong action star, comedian, director, producer, martial arts choreographer, screenwriter, singer, stunt performer and entrepreneur. He is famous locally, regionally and internationally. There has been a number of false news released claiming the star is dead with Chan repeatedly emerging in the limelight to prove he is not dead.

7) Sultan Sulu
The Sulu Sultan was the 7th most popular person searched for by Malaysians this year. This is due to the earlier news of Lahad Datu being invaded by the Sultan’s followers.
8) Adam Adli
Adam Adli is a Malaysian student activist. He was arrested under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act for statements made during a forum.
9) Lea Michele
Lea Michele is best known for her role as Rachel Berry on the hit American show, Glee. She was also dating co-star Cory Monteith who played Finn Hudson, her boyfriend on the hit show. Cory was found dead in a hotel room recently due to an overdose.
10) Gareth Bale
Gareth Bale is a footballer. He plays for Real Madrid and the Wales national team as a winger. He has earned himself a name for being a free kick specialist.
