Six students from Garden International School (GIS) attended The South East Asian Mathematics Competition (SEAMC) in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam on 1 & 2nd March 2014.
The Year 10 GIS Dragons Maths team flexed their mathematical muscles and brought home an impressive first place for the individual round, won by Lee Kyung Chan, and two first places and a third in the team rounds. Overall GIS placed 2nd out of 56 schools in the extremely competitive event, being beaten only by Hong Kong International School and making GIS the highest-ranking team in Malaysia.
A total of 336 students from 56 schools took part in this year’s competition. Over a two day period the students were presented with complex mathematical situations, both in teams and individually, and were challenged to apply their knowledge and problem solving skills to crack the mathematical conundrums.
SEAMC has evolved into an annual two-day event organised by local volunteer teachers on a rotational basis throughout the region. Hundreds of international school students, aged 15 or younger, and their teachers come together for a long weekend each year to share their enthusiasm for Mathematics and problem solving. Each school enters two teams of three students and the Warry Cup is awarded to the overall winning team each year.
