About the Photographer

Relive the epic and unforgettable Star Wars phenomenon through the talented photography of Malaysian artist Zahir Batin.

Zahir became interested in photography in 2012, after buying a Canon EOS 1000D camera. He bought the camera with the intention of taking a few holiday snaps, but soon found his passion for the art of photography. In his first collection of photographs, entitled “Zahir Batin Episode I” and recently exhibited at Artcube gallery in the Intermark Mall, Zahir reinterprets with Star Wars universe.

Using a combination of photography, paper art and miniature figurines of Stormtroopers, battle droids, R2-D2, General Grievous, and Darth Vader, he dreams up dramatic scenes. The results are spectacular, conveying drama, suspense and emotion. Vivid colours, atmospheric lighting and clever focusing bring the photos to life.

All the behind-the-scenes action can be seen on his Facebook page, giving his fans the opportunity to see the whole process and give it a go themselves. Zahir uses wires, strings and twigs to position figurines, then removes these instruments from the images post-production using Photoshop.

“All my photos are produced through trial and error, and even though with careful planning in terms of toys selection, composition, expression, props and tones, only 20% are successful” commented Zahir on his Facebook page.

The iconic Star Wars characters are also brought to planet earth. Fans of the movies never thought they would see Stormtroopers playing joyfully on a swing, or feeding giant chicks in a lush, springtime meadow. Other compositions use this light-hearted fun to relate more serious current affairs, for example in his photo entitled “Freedom for Palestine”, which features 2 Stormtroopers raising the Palestine flag upon a misty hillside.
