Malaysia’s First Owl Museum is in Penang
Malaysia’s first Owl Museum can be found on Penang Hill.
The museum focuses on introducing the fascinating world of owls to visitors, as well as their cultural relations to humans.
Located on a 2,500 sq ft area on Penang Hill, the museum has over 2,500 collection of owl exhibit.
The owner, Adrian Soh of Footprint Tourism Penang Sdn Bhd, had the idea to establish an owl museum back in 2010 from a friend, who was collecting just about anything relating to owls.
According to Adrian, countries such as South Korea, Cyprus and South Africa already had owl museums, and it was about time Malaysia had another reason to attract more tourist.
“Our fascination is recorded and reflected in the huge number of artistic representations of owls in the form of carvings, sculptures, paintings and tapestries throughout history at the museum,” he told Bernama.
Some of the interesting exhibits available include a blue ceramic owl with gold and platinum accents from Uruguay. There is also a collection of 2000 rare and unique art and craft artifacts obtained from more than 20 countries.
The materials used to make the owls on display include stone, metal, glass, wood, clay, plastic, buffalo horn, seashells, beans, porcelain, plant fibres, crystal, earthenware, paper and recycled material.
The museum opens from 9am to 6pm daily. Admission is RM10 for adults. Children under 12 can enter for free, while senior citizens aged 60 and above and students are entitled to a 50% discount.
Aside from admiring the displays, visitors can also purchase souvenirs, fashion accessories, fridge magnets and home decorative items and special prices.
