If you are lucky, permanent housing will be pre-organised before you arrive, or your new employer will put you up in a hotel until you’ve chosen a place to live. If not, there is a good choice of temporary accommodation in and around Kuala Lumpur and other large cities.
Choice
There are several international-standard serviced apartments in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, specially designed for long term guests. This includes everything from hotel rooms with kitchenette to luxury penthouses. Consider the location and the length of stay when deciding what you need– if you are in the city centre, cooking facilities may not be necessary as it is cheap and easy to eat out for a couple of weeks while you settle in.
Location
There are several serviced apartments in downtown KL, as well as a good range out with KLCC. Seek temporary accommodation near where you work, as you don’t want to waste time travelling too far across town. Ask the local and expat staff at your new company which areas they recommend.
Facilities
Most serviced apartments have all the facilities you would expect from a hotel, such as business centre, gym, restaurant, concierge, etc. However, this does vary from place to place so be sure to assess your requirements and find the right apartment for your needs. For example, you may require WiFi, which can vary greatly in price and quality, or you may need near-by childcare facilities.
Cost
Prices start from RM500 per week for the most basic offering. Be aware that serviced apartments in KL are also popular with tourists, meaning rates do increase during peak season. Hotels will offer special rates for long-term guests but may not volunteer these rates. Speak to the Sales Manager personally to get good rates and don’t be afraid to shop around between hotels. Ask your real estate agent for assistance in negotiating a good price.
