ONE OF THE COMMON conundrums faced by expats here in Malaysia concerns the choice of a venue where business associates and/or friends, typically a 
delightful blend of compatriots, Malays, Chinese and Indians, can be invited for a prestigious lunch or dinner without o?ending any food-choice sensibilities. Recently I and my wife Gudrun were invited to a luncheon in one of Tai Zi Heen Chinese Restaurant’s five private rooms. Prince Hotel, Level 2, Jalan Conlay in Kuala Lumpur. Imagine our surprise when we found that this delightful top class Cantonese restaurant at the Prince Hotel in Kuala Lumpur is also halal!
At Tai Zi Heen, the award-winning Chinese Chef de Cuisine, Ricky Thein and his very creative dim sum chef, Chong Lim Fong, have combined their considerable talents to come up with a delicious Chinese/Asian fusion of halal dishes that both tantalize and surprise.
We commenced our feast with a magnificent double-boiled sun-dried seafood soup with cordyceps bulbs.This was followed by a number of non-traditional dim sum dishes including a crispy beef dumpling with garlic sauce, steamed purple spinach chicken and prawn dumplings…. my wife’s favourite, steamed cod fish seaweed rolls and braised bean curd topped with crab roe and spinach puree, steamed jade dumplings with scallops and prawns, and finally the piece de resistance for me…the deep fried spicy salmon yam puff. We were also feted with roasted lamb cutlets presented in a superb Mongolian-style tomato sauce, fried unagi (eel) spring roll sticks served with parmesan cheese and hoisin 
sauce, and finally the ultimate yin and yang dish, two huge, tender, skewered prawns, one sweet and light coloured and the other savoury and dark coloured.This wonderful meal was beautifully rounded out with a refreshing chilled mango puree with vanilla ice-cream, sago and pomelo.
My wife, my good friends and I all enjoyed our meal tremendously and would not hesitate to recommend this unusual and superb restaurant to anyone looking for something special.
