Unlike Malaysia, which sees its population grow by around 500,000 people a year, Singapore has been facing a declining population as a result of their government’s efforts to reduce family sizes. It worked all too well, and now the Singapore Government faces concerns about the ageing population and the inability of a smaller working population to support the older members of society.
This led them to open their door to foreigners, which has not always been well-received by Singaporeans. In the 1980s, the Singapore Government set up two agencies to encourage marriages between similarly educated people. A few years ago, the two agencies were merged to become the Social Development Network, but still focus on helping single people meet other singles.
A TV advertisement by Mentos, the mint company in Singapore, encouraged everyone to make babies on Singapore’s National Day which falls on August 9th.
It’s not clear if the advertisement was endorsed by the Singapore Government, but it’s fairly sure to have received their unofficial blessing! You can check it out on YouTube under Mentos National Night – an ad well worth seeing, though unlikely to have passed Malaysia’s censors… even if they endorsed the sentiment.
