“The public can now pledge to donate their organs to save the lives of those in need of organ transplant via the Gift For Life website,” the New Straits Times reports.
According to Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, once a person has registered on the website to donate their organs, the website management will confirm it, and an organ donation pledge card will be sent to the donor’s address.
“We are working at making organ donation a culture in this country to increase the number of donors, especially among the younger generation as they form over 70 per cent of the population.”
According to the Health Ministry, there are 15,611 patients throughout the country waiting for organs to be donated to them. Out of this number, 15,581 are kidney patients, 16 with chronic liver disease, eight with heart disease, three with lung disease and six with both lung and heart diseases.
Datuk Lai says that the public is aware of the importance of donating their organs to save the lives of others, but the number of organ donors in Malaysia is still small. At the moment, the Ministry has received 205,478 forms by the public pledging to donate their organs, since last month. This makes up to 0.73% of the population, and is not enough.
