The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) announced that all bus operators are required to adopt and comply with the Industry Code of Practice – Safety, Health and Environment (iCOP-SHE) before they can obtain or renew their licenses.
According to a report from the Sun Daily, the compliance of the iCOP SHE is expected to begin in May 2013.
The code of practice aims to get bus operators to practice safety habits and to help reduce the number of accidents involving public transportation.
Some of the key points under the code include:
-Drivers to take a 30 minute break after four hours of driving.
-All drivers to undergo and pass an annual medical examination.
-All vehicles to be checked on a daily basis for faulty components.
-Management to draw up a safety maintenance and inspection plan for all vehicles.
-Drivers to undergo regular training sessions and aptitude tests.
-Drivers to be trained to identify road hazards while driving, and promote risk assessment and control at all times.
