Many expats will be pleased the 2013 budget did not include any further increases on taxes on alcoholic products.
Malaysia already has some of the worldís highest taxes on alcohol. Interestingly, cigarette prices in Malaysia are relatively low compared to other countries. For example, the price of a pack of cigarettes in Malaysia is around one-third of the UK price whereas alcoholic beverages are more expensive than the UK.
This is a little surprising since there seems to be plenty of evidence to suggest that higher cigarette prices are effective at deterring young smokers.
