General Elections in Malaysia Coming Soon

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

There has been considerable speculation over the past few months about when the next General Election will be held. The constitutional parliamentary term is five years and that expires this coming June.

The current best guess is that elections will be held in March, although at the time of writing this, no formal announcement has been made.

It is expected to be a bitterly fought contest. UMNO, which leads the Barisan Nasional (the national coalition), has effectively been in power since Malaysia’s independence in 1957. In the last election, held in March 2008, the ruling party suffered a setback in the polls with the opposition capturing several states. This was the result of some discontent with the ruling party, partly because many felt was the party was not adequately addressing their grievances.

However, since then, the Government Transformation Programme has sought to show that the government can reinvent itself and come up with a realistic plan to ensure Malaysia’s future growth and prosperity. It seems to be working so there appears to be growing confidence in the government.
