(This post is brought to you by Hammam Baths)
The Hammam Baths is a truly one of a kind experience. The moment you step through the antique wooden doors, you are immediately transported to a mystical world filled with beautiful gardens, ancient baths and steaming cups of mint tea. .e breathtaking décor of the Hammam itself, with its gorgeous lighting, tiled art and plush relaxing areas, is bound to make you feel like you have flown across the oceans for an exotic getaway.
The famous storyteller Scheherazade once said “A town is incomplete without a Hammam” and Kuala Lumpur now has the distinction of being the only Asian city to host not one, but two Moroccan versions of this traditional Turkish bath. Much like their flagship outlet, the newly opened Publika branch offers a wide range of spa packages and treatments, using materials and oils flown straight in from Morocco.
The uniqueness of this spa lies in the Hammam and Gommage treatment, where your skin is cleansed and pampered through the bathing and applying of herbal remedies and essential oils to ensure the skin is left feeling both clean and smooth.
The hammam or washing stage allows the body to acclimatise to room temperature by bathing in hot water. A layer of black Beldi soap (a substance made up of olive and eucalyptus oil), alum crystals or henna is applied to eradicate any bacteria and soften dead skin. The gommage (or scrub in French) follows with the help of a scrubbing mitt comprising of silk materials, to effectively remove all the dead skin from the body, increase circulation and reduce cellulite – a veritable trifecta of wellness if there ever was any!
The Moorish Body Polish comes highly recommended as once all the dead skin is scrubbed away, a layer of Moroccan volcanic clay (known as rhassoul clay, renowned for its detoxifying and purifying properties) mixed with all natural herbs is applied and left on for further nourishing. As a special treat, get the Rose Blossom Hair Masque – a divine mixture of volcanic clay, olive oil and Damascus rosewater to nourish your hair from root to tip. Using a gentle shower gel with rosemary essence and a geranium shampoo, both body and hair masque are hen rinsed off, leaving you feeling fresh, clean and positively giddy with delight.
The Hammam baths also feature Aromatic and Detoxifying Massages on the menu to relax muscles, reduce tension and relieve stress, along with Revitalising and Purifying facials to improve the texture and tone of the skin. Flying in therapists straight from Morocco ensures that this hammam experience is as authentic as the ancient rituals still practiced in the country today. The Hammam also uses argan oil, one of the richest sources of Vitamin E, and renowned for its wide array of health properties; as well as the very expensive Huile Sacre, a blend of argan oil, frankincense, myrh and sandalwood.
Using a combination of special soaps and oils to cleanse the body, draw out toxins, and soothe the skin, the hammam baths is an excellent way to melt away worries, stress, and tension while relaxing in a cocoon of warmth and comfort. .e hammam treatments boast numerous advantages including pain relief, muscle relaxation, and respiratory benefits. Paired with massages, they form a particularly powerful combination to effectively release toxins from the body. An essential part of Moroccan life, most people make weekly trips to their local hammam to carry out this rite that has its roots in the 10th century – when the Arabs built versions of the Greek-Roman baths they encountered following their conquests.
Whilst the Bangsar Village branch is charming and intimate, the flagship branch offers a more majestic ambience. For deep relaxation and overall well-being, there are few treatments in the world that are as effective as the healing properties, warmth, and steam of a traditional hammam. A breathtakingly blissful experience, treat yourself to a day at the Hammam baths – a definite must-try in the spa and wellness stakes, guaranteed to make you feel like a princess.
