Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Name: Eric Drio
Home Country: the Philippines
Job/Industry: Electrical Designer/Oil and Gas
Marital Status: Married with one child
Other Countries you have lived: Singapore

What brought you to Malaysia?
I wanted to continue my career with a job abroad and I chose Malaysia because it is close to home. We have been here for almost two years and, so far, we’re having a great time.

How easy was it to adapt to living in a new country?
I thought that I would have a difficult time adjusting to the transport system in KL, but it was actually pretty easy. Also, I thought that I wouldn’t like Malaysian cuisine, but satay, supt ulang, and mee are already favourites! Malaysia and the Philippines have pretty much the same type of climate,
which made it easy for us to adapt.

What do you like about living in Malaysia?
I like the weather, I like the various attractions that are available for children, and I like the fact that petrol and house utilities are affordable.

What do you wish you could change about Malaysia?
Just one thing: the jam!

How long do you think you will stay?
We don’t really know, but for now we love it here, and we don’t have plans to move to another country or go back to the Philippines.

What do you enjoy doing at the weekend?
We normally hit the mall to shop or dine. Our kid loves the outdoors, so we make it a habit to go somewhere nice to bond with our son. We go to church on Sundays and spend the rest of day at home watching TV/movies and cooking or baking.

Do you frequent any restaurants serving food from your homeland?
No. We cook Filipino dishes at home every day so we really don’t need to go to a Filipino restaurant!

Do you own any property in Malaysia?
No. We own properties in the Philippines because we still want to settle down in our home country when the “right” time comes.

Are most of your friends Malaysians or expats?
Most of our friends here are Filipino expatriates (other families) too. We like to have gatherings, arrange sports activities, etc.

What memory will you always treasure when you come to leave Malaysia?
Our son learned most of his “firsts” here, so I guess I will also remember KL for that.
