Twitter #music was launched recently. The new service was unveiled on Good Morning America and a blog post called Twitter #musical. In the post, Twitter wrote that the app makes use of Twitter activity that includes engagement and Tweets to detect and feature the most popular soundtracks and emerging artists. The site hopes to be a place where music lovers can get all the information about artists and tracks that they want. It would also allow them to follow musicians, know what they listen to and follow, and in turn discover more music.
Unfortunately, it seems the app is not available in Malaysia yet, as it does not feature in the country’s iTunes Store list.
Twitter has made the app compatible with iPhone so that you can listen to your favorite music on the go. However, the site did not announce an Android version of this app. So, for now, the Android users will have to wait.
It is Not a Free Music Streaming Service
If you are wondering where all the music comes from, the answer is Rdio, iTunes and Spotify. You have iTunes preview which plays music automatically with the app as it does within iTunes. While the app works with iTunes, it does not direct you to Apple to buy the music but to the streaming services. If you want to listen to full songs, you will need to have a Spotify or Rdio subscription. In essence, even though the app can be downloaded free of cost, it would cost you to listen to full music through it.

The Features of the Twitter #Music App
The app gives you several images from Twitter on a checkerboard with a Now Playing interface, which shows the musicians you follow and what music the artists themselves are tweeting about. Each of the squares features an album cover picture along with Twitter name and profile picture.
The Twitter #music app also has a suggested music screen and is capable of searching music of your favorite artists. You would be able to find the music you like and also play it through the interface. The app also encourages you to instantly share what you are listening to. In other words, you can Tweet about the music you are listening to from the “player screen” directly.
The Popularity of the App
It has been nice to see Twitter venturing into providing all sorts of new services lately, music being the latest one. It started as the top app that was being downloaded for music when it was launched on April 18, pushing Spotify to the number 2 position in App Store. Overall, it was the 5th app that was downloaded most. It is almost two weeks since the launch now, Twitter #music has fallen to 11th in music category and 124th overall. Spotify though has regained its number one position in music category. The most common complaint about the app has been that it only features already popular music and is not helpful in finding new tracks.
