Volkswagen and Apple Create the iBeetle

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

In collaboration with Apple, Volkswagen will be launching the iBeetle convertible and coup at the Shanghai Auto Show. The iBeetle is a Beetle that is designed to integrate with the iPhone. Both the models of the iBeetle will be launched in early 2014.

The car, which has stylish exteriors, will be available in custom colors including candy white, Oryx white, reflex silver, deep black pearl effect, black monochrome, and platinum grey. The interiors of the car are in grey and black, with contrasting cream colored seams that give it a classy look.

The two important components that make the iBeetle what it is are the iPhone docking station that comes with the car and a special app. With these two, you will be able to use your iPhone hands free to take calls, play music and more.  In fact the name, iBeetle, seems a bit sensational.  The car seems to just offer stronger integration with the iPhone, rather than some fundamental leaps in innovation.

On the bright side, if you are a loyal iPhone user, the iBeetle will allow you to use your phone safely when driving. When the phone is connected to the dashboard or the dock wirelessly, it can even read out loud the messages from your Facebook or Twitter accounts.

Another interesting feature is the Postcard functionality, which lets your friends know your location through a digital message. Besides that, it also tells you the temperature inside the car, has a compass and also a chronometer.

In spite of all the hype, the iBeetle is not very different from the other Beetle versions from the German automobile manufacturer. The integration technology is not groundbreaking per se, but it certainly is a convenient one. And how well the iBeetle does, we will have to wait and see.
