Social media is a powerful medium for music, news, and stories to spread rapidly through society. Before social media, publishers could much more heavily influence public interest. Social media now lets the public directly create huge awareness and endorse topics by sharing. Thus, we like to cover this interest by publishing each month the 10 most shared videos in social media. 1. PSY – Gentleman M/V
PSY became a global YouTube phenomenon with his song “Gangnam Style” and the accompanying music video. Most people around the world did not understand a word of the lyrics but they were so engrossed by the video and catchy tune that it thrust PSY into the international limelight almost overnight. As of May, “Gangnam Style” has been viewed almost 1.6 billion times on YouTube.
With “Gentleman M/V”, it looks like PSY might be able to replicate the success of “Gangnam Style”. PSY topped the list in April 2013, as “Gentleman M/V” was the most shared video during that month. The number of views for this video peaked at 38 million on April 14 – a number that broke the record of most views in a single day. PSY’s “Gentleman M/V” was shared more than 4,550,000 times in April.
2. How Animals Eat Their Food
This short comedy sketch turned viral immediately after it was uploaded on YouTube by YouTube user MisterEpicMann. This very amusing video depicts how animals would eat their food if sharing a meal at a dinner table. What makes this video more amusing is the fact that one guy sits at the table very stoically throughout his partner’s antics. One man in this video does an interpretive dance of how animals like kangaroos, lizards, rhinoceroses, etc. would eat at the table with great comic effect.
3. Dove Real Beauty Sketches
Dove’s advertisements have always been famous for focusing on inner beauty and for exposing the trade secrets of the beauty and cosmetics industry. This three minute video exposes the fact that women are the harshest critics of their own looks. In this advertisement, seven women were asked to describe themselves while a sketch artist drew their pictures. The next set of pictures that the artist drew was based on how complete strangers described the women.
The women were brought back and shown the two sketches that were so different when compared. This ad shows that women need to feel better about themselves and accept their real beauty.
4. baby&me / the new Evian film
April saw a high number of ads in the top 10 list of most shared videos. After the Dove commercial, the second most shared advertisement belonged to French mineral water brand – Evian. Babies are universally cute and the creators of Evian’s advertisement totally capitalized on the cuteness of babies.
5. Pink – Just Give Me a Reason ft. Nate Ruess
P!nk’s video – “Try”, was one of the most shared music videos in January 2013 and her next video “Just Give Me A Reason”, is the second most shared music video after PSY in terms of the number of shares. In this ballad, she teams up with Nate Ruess – the lead singer of Fun and this could be one of the reasons why the video has been so popular. This song comes off P!nk’s sixth album The Truth About Love.
6. K-Mart – Ship My Pants
This is the third advertisement that pops in the Top 10 list of most shared videos in April 2013. Toeing the line between vulgar and humorous, this ad grabs people’s attention by using the word “ship” many times over that it almost sounds a lot like a swear word after a while. This ad was created to promote K-Mart’s new shipping service and features a whole lot of people talking about shipping their pants, shipping their beds, shipping their drawers, etc. K-Marts is a major shopping retail store in America. This 30 second ad may not have been sophisticated but users had a lot of laughs sharing this ad repeatedly on social media platforms.
7. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – Thrift Shop Feat. Wanz (Official Wanz)
This breakout song by Ben Haggerty or Macklemore has been in the top 10 most shared videos list since January, 2013 and has barely changed positions. Unlike other videos that are like flashes in a pan, “Thrift Shop” has been able to stay in the charts for months. This song features in his debut album The Heist and features other artists like Ryan Lewis and Wanz. Unlike other rap songs, the theme of this song does not revolve around women and promiscuous behavior.
8. Daft Punk – Get Lucky (Official Video) ft. Pharrell Williams
Electronic legends Daft Punk, from France, mellowed their sound but still managed to boost their popularity with their new song “Get Lucky” in collaboration with Pharrell Williams. This is the lead single from Random Access Memories – their fourth studio album. Although this song was released as a digital download in April 19, 2013, an audio-only version of this video has become the most shared video in April 2013.
9. Bruno Mars – When I was Your Man [Official Video]
“When I Was Your Man” is a track off Bruno Mars’ second studio album Unorthodox Jukebox. The video was shared about 910,000 times in the month of April. This track has been ranked lower than “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk as the music video of Bruno Mars’ track was released in February, 2013 and failed to collect the number of shares that “Get Lucky” did in a few days.
10. Justin Timberblake – Mirrors
“Mirrors” was the second single released from Justin Timberlake’s comeback album The 20/20 Experience, and it was almost as popular and “Suit & Tie”.
