The Problem with the Immigration Department’s Computers

We are often surprised by how often we hear that the immigration department’s computers are not working. In a world where so many companies boast about their next-to-zero downtime, this seems to be an anomaly. We have been advised on several occasions that there would be a delay in processing documents because the system was down. At one point, the thought occurred that this was just an excuse for processing the papers slowly. It seems not.

Recently the system which controls the issuance of Malaysia My Second Home visas was down for a prolonged period, meaning people arriving in Malaysia to pick up their approved MM2H visas were told it was not possible. This gives a negative impression of the country and is inconsistent with their progress in other areas of automation such as the Malaysian ID cards, which are quite advanced. We have tried to find out why this problem continues, but without success. The immigration department, unfortunately, is not as open as other government departments.
