As a preventive measure against the bird flu virus, Sarawak has banned poultry from China and any other countries with history of avian influenza.
According to Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, Sarawak will step up surveillance at all entry points ( a continuing effort since 2004) under the National Avian Influenza Surveillance Programme.
“Up until April this year, 51,119 avian samples from wet markets, pet shops, commercial chicken and duck farms, pigeons, quails, swallows, fighting cocks and other wild birds, have been tested and found to be negative,” he said.
Jabu, who is also Sarawak’s Minister for Modernisation of Agriculture, said that the state’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will be upgraded to bio-security level 2 plus (BSL2+) from bio-safety by year’s end at a cost of RM1.5 million. Once completed, this lab will have the right equipment’s for diagnostic work on the more dangerous diseases such as avian influenza, SARS, Nipah disease, Q Fever and tuberculosis.
