The 3 day Festa San Pedro (feast of st peter) held at the Portuguese settlement of Ujong Pasir, begins today, and looks set to draw in a colossal 50,000 visitors from all over Malaysia. Despite having been named after the patron saint of fisherman, the event is less a solemn religious festival and more a celebration of multicultural exchange in which games, sports and (of course) fishing competitions are held. The ‘Festa’ part of the event will also be showcasing a sumptuous array of authentic Portuguese cuisine prepared by the Portuguese inhabitants of Ujong Pasir.
One of the most dazzling and popular components of the Festa San Pedro is the fishing boat decorating competition which will feature 30 vessels festooned with colorful lights and ornaments.
Dramatics will also be implemented at this year’s event to emphasize interracial harmony as well as the contributions that the Portuguese have made to the distinctive culture of Malacca. The main performance, a sketch set in a local coffee shop, will be delivered in the unique Portuguese dialect and will encapsulate the village life that has characterized the Ujong Pasir Portuguese community for many years.
