Malaysian’s are likely to pay almost double the fee initially agreed upon in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Malaysia and Indonesia in 2011. Though the salaries of Indonesian maids will not fall under the minimum wage act, and will still be determined by Market prices and employer status, the original fee of RM4, 511 will soon be raised to 8,000.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has asserted that the new fee will incorporate travel documents and arrangements, training costs, travel expenses, medical checks and fees for agencies both in Indonesia and Malaysia. Food and boarding costs will also be implemented prior to the maid being provided with an employer.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has informed the press following a committee meeting that "Details of the structural costs will be announced by the Human Resources Ministry soon after both countries have both consented to the changes,"
One major reason behind the significant price hike is the discontent among foreign maid agency’s with the price settled upon by the MoU in 2011, as it was incongruent to the expenses that had to be paid by the agencies themselves.
The ‘Journey Performed Visa’, which had long been employed by Malaysians to hire Indonesian maids without agency entanglements, is also set to be abolished.
