A local daily reported on Sunday that this year’s Perseid meteor showers were expected to put up a display of more than 100 showers around 11pm last Monday (12 August) and early in the morning on Tuesday (13 August). The meteor showers could, apparently, be seen from any open space with clear skies.
Unfortunately for most Malaysians, the heavy rain over the northern and central parts of the peninsula resulted in most not being able to catch the meteor shower. But, thanks to clear skies in Johor and Negeri Sembilan, the southern states reported a sighting of up to 20 crossings of Perseid meteor showers.
According to a statement from Head of Space Science Research Unit Mhd Fairos Asillam, from the National Space Agency (Angkasa), the Perseid meteor shower is an annual event that occurs every August. “The Perseid meteor showers occurs as the Earth passes through the Swift-Tuttle comet’s dusty trail and its debris hurtle into the planet’s atmosphere and flare up in brilliant meteors or shooting stars,” he said.
