Update (9 October 2013): Samsung Announces Curved Smartphone: Galaxy Round
There is some exciting news for smartphones lovers. Samsung announced recently that it will be launching a new curved screen smartphone this October. The news was announced in Seoul at an event to launch the Galaxy Note 3, by DJ Lee, the strategic marketing head at Samsung mobile.
Mr. Lee did not reveal what the new phone would be called, nor did he give any specifications. According to grapevine reports, the new smartphone will have a curved OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) panel, though it will not be totally flexible.
Early on, there were rumors that Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smart watch would come with a curved screen, but it turned out to be a flat AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) screen.
Samsung showed that it was keen on developing curved screen smartphone technology, when it brought out a prototype called Youm at the International Consumer Electronics Show, held in January 2013. But it is not known yet whether the new phone will take the Youm idea forward, or will it be a completely new design.
Several smartphone makers are jousting for space in the Malaysian market and it is a very competitive business. But Samsung has been responsible for many innovations in the past and it remains to be seen what impact this phone could have.
