New graduates are finding it harder to secure employment. According to the Malaysian Employees Federation, there has been a one-third drop in job vacancies compared to last year’s numbers. The main reason seems to be the government’s decision to raise the minimum retirement age from 55 to 60, which came into force in July this year. This situation was further compounded by concerns about the economic outlook for Malaysia and the world. Nevertheless, raising the retirement age was likely overdue, as Malaysia’s official retirement age was 55, one of the youngest such ages in the world.
