Penang’s Park in the Sea: Should Visitors Pay to Enjoy?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Penang’s Wet World Wild Adventure Park, Malaysia’s first marine theme park, has become a popular spot for tourists and locals since it opened on Christmas day with over 800 visitors so far.

But, according to a report in the Star newspaper, some netizens aren’t too happy about paying an entrance fee to enjoy the facilities.

The park is located at Moonlight Bay and features 10 inflatables mimicking sports like rock climbing and trampolines. The entrance fee is RM40 for adults and RM30 for children.

Netizens feel that the beach is a public area and it is not right for anyone to close of a section and charge people a fee for entering. They feel that any development in a public area should be free for anyone.

But the water park operators, Theme Park Concepts and Services, say that they have the right to charge an admission fee because they took a lease for the sea off Moonlight Bay. They are paying RM8,000 a year to the state government to lease about 1ha of land and sea surface.

What do you think about this? Should the water park be free for all?
