Dr. Eeson Sinthamoney
MD (Malaysia), MRCOG (London), DFFP (UK)
Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine (UK/Singapore)
Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist
Dr. Eeson Sinthamoney graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1995. He underwent his initial training in general obstetrics and gynaecology in Hospital Taiping and Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia.
He left for work in the United Kingdom in 2000. He subsequently obtained the MRCOG in 2001 and was later appointed Clinical Fellow in Reproductive Medicine at St George’s Hospital Medical School in London in 2001-2002.
During his fellowship in London, he was introduced to the multiple interesting facets of fertility treatment including the initial fertility assessment of the couple, In-vitro fertilization, one-stop fertility diagnosis and tubal patency testing by Hydro-contrast -Sonography (HyCoSy). In addition to the above, he was also deeply involved in the other important aspects of Reproductive Medicine. This included being the running the Gynaecology Endocrine clinic where patients in the reproductive age group with hormonal disorders like Polycytic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), Premature Ovarian Failure and severe Premenstrual syndrome were referred to. He also ran the menopause clinic which was one of the few tertiary referral centres in London for menopause problems. He also worked closely with Mr. Issac T. Manyonda, a renowned Obstetrician and Gynaecologist of international stature to run a recurrent miscarriage clinic where patients with more than two consecutive miscarriages were seen. He was also involved in the Acute Gynaecology Unit which at that time was a unique one-stop service that accepted referrals from within the hospital as well as general practitioners in London of women with a myriad of gynaecological problems including miscarriages, pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancies and menorrhagia.
Upon his return to Malaysia, he was posted as Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to Hospital Taiping and later to Hospital Melaka in 2004.
In December 2005, he was sent to the newly completed Hospital Ampang, the national referral centre for haematology, where together with his loyal team of young doctors and nurses, was able to start and subsequently successfully develop maternity and gynaecological services. He was the founding Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Hospital Ampang until end 2008.
In 2009, he moved to Hospital Kuala Lumpur to further his interest in Reproductive Medicine. This later led him to an attachment at the Medically Assisted Conception Unit of UKM Medical Centre.
He then went on to Singapore, where he did his fellowship in reproductive medicine at KK women’s and children’s hospital. KKIVF as it is more fondly known is an extremely large fertility centre, likely the largest in Southeast Asia. In 2010/2011, KKIVF undertook approximately 1500 fresh IVF cycles and a further 550 frozen thaw cycles, in addition to numerous IUI cycles. KKIVF is also renowned for its expertise in treating male fertility and therefore many testicular sperm aspiration procedures as well as testicular biopsies are carried out, followed by IVF/ICSI.
The IVF success rates at KKIVF are very impressive and as such serves as a much sought after training centre for clinicians and embryologists alike. Furthermore, Dr. SF Loh (Dr. Eeson’s ‘shifu’ at KKIVF) is an exceptionally gifted laparoscopic surgeon who undertook numerous minimally invasive procedures (laparoscopic as well as hysteroscopic) for fertility patients. These procedures included removing endometriotic cysts, fibroids and endometrial polyps as well as repairing damaged fallopian tubes.
He returned to Malaysia in February 2011 as Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in Hospital Kuala Lumpur. There he furthered his experience in fertility treatment, especially in IVF and male fertility treatment. He is also passionate about minimally invasive treatment options, including laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and ultrasound guided cyst aspiration.
In addition to his sub-specialty interest in Reproductive Medicine, he remains interested in the many interesting facets of Obstetrics especially concerning the more controversial issues like Caesarean section, Induction of labour and the use of traditional medicinal options in pregnancy.
His main areas of interest include:
1.Primary fertility assessment
2.Fertility treatment options including IUI and IVF
3.Male fertility including assessment, treatment and testicular biopsy
4.Hysteroscopic treatment options
5.Laparoscopic surgical treatment
6.Ultrasound guided cyst aspiration
