Malaysia! Did you know that we are neighbors to the country that houses the “Selfie Capital of the World”? Now if you’re wondering what a “Selfie Capital” is, in the first place, here’s the backdrop. The popular magazine TIME examined over 400,000 self-shots, (selfies) taken by folks and posted on Instagram to profile their demography. Cities with highest density of selfies per capita were conferred the title of “selfiest places”.
Time used Instagram photos that were both, tagged as a #selfie and bore coordinates of the geographical location where the photo was taken. The magazine ranked 459 cities in total and found that the financial capital of Philippines, the Makati City was also its Selfie Capital. 258 out of every 100,000 citizens take selfies in Makati City.
Let’s check the top ten “selfie” places in the world, shall we?
1. Philippines – Makati City and Pasig
Makati City, which is home to around 500,000 people has 258 people per 100,000 taking selfies. To put things in perspective, more than 1200 people in the metropolitan area took selfies in a total of 48 hours.
2. New York – Manhattan
Folks from Manhattan were found to be closely comparable to those from the Makati City in admiring their self-shots. The city boasts 202 people, per 100,000 taking selfies.
3. Florida – Miami
After NY and Philippines, comes Miami, rather far behind with 155 people taking selfies, out of every 100,000 individuals.
4. California – Anaheim and Santa Ana
Following close behind were folks from Anaheim and Santa Ana with 147 out of every 100,000 taking selfies and posting on Instagram.
5. Malaysia – Petaling Jaya
Thanks to every 141 out of 100,000 self-takers from Petaling Jaya, Malaysia was ranked among the top 5 selfiest places of the world.
6. Israel – Tel Aviv
139 Israelis from Tel Aviv, out of every 100,000 indulge in selfie-taking.
7. England – Manchester
144 English folks, out of every 100,000 took selfies in the two-day period used by Time for the analysis.
8. Italy – Milan
108 out of every 100,000 citizen from Milan were under the spell of selfies.
9. Philippines – Cebu City
Another Philippinian city – Cebu with 99 out of 100,000 people taking selfies.
10. Malaysia – George Town
And, we have Malaysia again! 95 Malaysians from George Town, out of every 100,000 took selfies during the test period. Other Malaysian cities include:
- Kuala Lumpur – with 72 in every 100,000 people indulging in selfie-taking, K.L. ranked twenty-first on the Time’s list.
- Johor Bahru – with 48 in every 100,000 Malaysians from Johor Bahru taking selfies and posting on Instagram, the city was placed fiftieth on the the list.
