Malaysia’s First Electric Vehicle Sharing Programme

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Come August, Malaysians will be able ride in Malaysia’s first electric vehicle (EV), thanks to a sharing programme for the public that is based on a pay-as-you-use concept.

To use the cars, a Renault Zoe or the Nissan Leaf, members will have to make a booking using their Smartphone. They will be given a unique code and will be directed to the nearest stations with available cars. Members will then have to key in the code to unlock the car and drive them. Once they are done, they have to park the car at designated EV parking bays under the programme. The charges incurred will be based on time. The pick-up and drop-off points would most likely be in convenient locations such as LRT stations, shopping malls and prominent government buildings.

This sharing programme is a joint venture among three companies; CMS Consortium Sdn Bhd (COMOS), Malaysia Automative Institute (MAI) and Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (GreenTech Malaysia).
Membership is required to rent the cars and people can start applying for one in July. Details on how one can apply will be revealed soon. Rental rates are said to be affordable, although an exact figure have yet to be revealed. But don’t expect it to be cheaper than getting a taxi, though.

The programme will first start in the Klang Valley with 40 cars. Langkawi, Malacca, Johor Bahru and Penang will follow after.
