The Sunway Group raised RM750,000 for the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF). Sunway and the NKF collaborated by organising a charity dinner to raise funds for promoting organ donation and also to increase awareness of kidney transplantation. The dinner was held at the Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa on the 19th of May, 2014. This is the third time the Sunway Group collaborated with NKF. The RM750,000 raised will help NKF in establishing a Kidney Transplant Promotion Unit under their Public Education Department.

Tan Sri Dato` Dr. Abu Bakar Suleiman, President, National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia stated, “Based on statistics from the National Transplant Resource Centre, there are 18,347 dialysis patients on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. Unfortunately, it is regrettable to announce that less than 1% of Malaysians have pledged to be organ donors.” It is apparent that the public is unaware of this alarming issue. Therefore, this noble cause aims to raise awareness of kidney transplantation as a preferred treatment for kidney failure patients as well as to promote kidney donation from among living, related donors.

According to Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, AO, Founder & Chairman of Sunway Group, healthcare is one of the key pillars of Sunway Group’s corporate social responsibility efforts apart from education and C.A.R.E projects.“Sunway partners with organisations such as NKF that have a remarkable compassionate impact on our society. Thus Sunway Group is able to improve the health and wellness of individuals, promoting healthier and happier lives and communities,”Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah said.

Since the year 2000, Sunway Group has been supporting NKF to raise funds for the foundation through fundraising dinners. Sunway Group successfully raised a total of RM1,657,000 from two fundraising dinners in 2006 and 2010 respectively. The funds enabled NKF to acquire two units of NKF LifeCheck Mobile Health Screening Bus which aim to cater to the rising numbers of poor and needy patients worldwide. The NKF LifeCheck was the first customised 40-seater bus in Malaysia designed specifically to conduct health screenings and has screened more than 180,000 members of the public to date.

The charity dinner also saw guests enjoying a Cliff Richard and ABBA tribute show from Australia. The professional artiste enticed the crowd by performing classic hit songs BY Cliff Richard and ABBA.
