If you are lucky, you might be able to catch the start and end of a Camelopardalid meteor shower tonight. According to National Space Agency’s (ANGKASA) research Officer Mohamed Redzuan Tahar, this will take place when the Earth passes through the path of Comet 209P/LINEAR. When the comet gets closer to the sun, it would melt and evaporate. At the same time, bits of the comet would break off and enter the planet’s atmosphere and burn.
According to Redzuan, the best time to catch the meteor shower would be this afternoon (23rd May) between 2pm and 4pm. About 100 to 400 shooting stars are expected to be in the atmosphere in just one hour! But, of course, this will be difficult as it is in the afternoon. But worry not, as based on predictions, you could still catch the meteor shower tonight, between 8pm and 3am.
You don’t need a gadget or fancy glasses to catch the meteor shower, but you will need to be at an open space with very little light pollution. Best to pray for a clear sky as well, as clouds could hamper the view.
The best places to be in to catch the meteor shower would be at Fraser’s Hill, Bukit Tinggi, Sekinchan, Kuala Selangor, Klang, Rawang and Ulu Yam.
Redzuan also warned people that everything is based on prediction. “Everything is based on prediction, so we are not sure of its accuracy.”
