Last week, the Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor released a statement stating that a fine will be imposed on soup kitchens operating within a 2km radius around the city centre. The minister also said that the government will look into cleaning the streets of the homeless.
Of course, the statement created uproar among citizens and soup kitchens as well.
In a recent meeting with 12 non-governmental organisations (NGOs), Federal Territories Ministry secretary-general Datuk Adnan Md Ikhsan said that soup kitchens can continue operating as usual, for now, and that the directive announced by Tengku Adnan would only be enforced after Hari Raya. He also stressed that the ban referred to mobile soup kitchens that come with concerns of hygiene in food disposal. NGOs with proper premises and their own kitchens can continue their operations.
“The public said the enforcement agencies are heartless. We are not trying to force anyone. We want to ensure cleanliness, which is why we are working together with the various NGOs,” said Adnan.
