It was a night of good food and lovely French wines – and a great deal of conviviality – at Samplings on the Fourteenth, the fine dining venue at Berjaya Times Square that also does double duty as a teaching restaurant for the adjoining Berjaya College of Hospitality. Guests braved the double threat of afternoon showers and KL traffic to enjoy a truly memorable Expat Wine Dinner.
As eager diners arrived, a crisp, racy Sauvignon Blanc was served with a selection of canapés. Once everyone took their seats overlooking the city from the 14th floor, a wonderful procession of dishes began emerging from the kitchen, starting with a Smoked Loin of New Zealand Salmon, followed by a very well-received Porcini Cappuccino – an intense mushroom soup with a foam topping, both of which were accompanied beautifully by a golden 2012 La Closerie des Lys Chardonnay. A palate-cleansing Corossol Sherbet was served next, heightening anticipation for the main dish, Braised Paupiette of Beef served with almond-crusted potato mash and Vichy carrots. This excellent dish was paired with a 2009 Bernard Magrez Réserve de la Famille, a Merlot dominant blend from Bordeaux. Finally, coffee and tea service began, along with the final dish of the evening, a wonderful Hawaiian Vanilla Ice Cream served in a warm Strawberry Sauce with Sarawakian Green Peppercorns and plenty of fresh strawberries. A terrific finish to an excellent Wine Dinner!
