A report by Reuters confirms that search and rescue officials spotted red and white debris floating during an aerial search today. The debris, according to the report, is most likely part of the AirAsia plane that went missing on Sunday.
Acting director general of air transportation at the transportation ministry, Djoko Murjatmodjo, said that the debris spotted was red and white in colour and officials are checking to see if it belongs to the missing aircraft.
Some of the debris spotted included large objects that resembled a life raft, life jackets, a plane door, emergency slide and more.
Flight QZ8501, an Airbus A320-200 carrying 162 people, had taken off at 5.20 am from Surabaya, Indonesia, on Sunday, and was scheduled to land at Singapore’s Changi Airport at 8.30 am the same day.
It last contacted the Air Traffic Control at 6.12 am Indonesian time (7.12 am Malaysian time).
