Malaysians spend a lot of time and money on grocery shopping. The average Malaysian can spend about RM 5,760 on groceries alone every year. There are over 40 supermarket chains in Malaysia and most of them are located in Kuala Lumpur.

Although many local grocery stores have websites for customers to conveniently shop online, which saves time from traffic, heavy bags and long queues – there are still occasions when one has to pay a visit to the grocery store, to quickly pick up some last minute items.
For that, here are 10 major grocery stores in KL to shop:
1.Tesco
This British multinational grocery chain came to Malaysia in 2001. They offer fresh produce, household items and apparel. Apart from that, Tesco also have their own in-house brands, namely Tesco Choice and Tesco Light Choice. The best part about shopping in Tesco is that you don’t need to pay for parking at any independent Tesco store. Currently, there are 40 Tesco outlets in Malaysia and you can find them at Klang Valley, Perak, Penang, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, Johor, and Kelantan.

2. AEON
Formerly known as JUSCO, Japan’s largest retail group AEON first came to Malaysia in 1985. With 28 outlets operating across Malaysia, AEON is certainly a good place to shop at, as it offers food, clothes, and lifestyle products – all under one roof. Besides that, AEON also has their own global private brand called TOPVALU, which was initially rolled out in 1994, in Japan.

3. Giant
Giant promises great value, big variety and low prices. The brand was founded in 1944 as a small grocery store in KL. Being one of the leading retailing chain in Malaysia that pioneered the concept of modern supermarket shopping, Giant hypermarket lives up to its name by offering over 100,000 items ranging from household items, daily essentials, fresh produce, and general merchandise, at affordable price.

4. Cold Storage
Currently, there are 17 Cold Storage supermarkets in Malaysia. The brand was founded in Singapore in 1903. In Malaysia, Cold Storage is attached under GCH Retail (M) Sdn Bhd. This supermarket offers a large selection of imported goods – close to 40 categories from different overseas brands. For example, one can find spices and sauces from brands such as Waitrose and Epicure from the UK, Tasmanian Gourmet from Australia and Ina Paarman from South Africa.

5. Sam’s Groceria
The name SAM’s Groceria stands for Saya Anak Malaysia. The first physical SAM’s Groceria outlet opened its doors in Penang, followed by Encorp Strand Mall in Kota Damansara and Nu Sentral in KL. Jaya Grocer was founded back in 2007, and its first store opened at Jalan 33 in Petaling Jaya. Located at Publika, Ben’s Independent Grocer (BIG) is a grocery store under the BIG group. The BIG group also has a number of F&B outlets under their brand, such as Plan B and Ben’s.
