This post is brought to you by Ethnicraft.
Ethnicraft, the producer of Belgium-designed teak wood furniture, has moved to Wisma Academy in Petaling Jaya.
Humble beginnings
The European company, initially started in 1995, was founded by two Belgian entrepreneurs with the values of ‘innovative, authentic and contemporary’ design.
The designers used reclaimed and plantation teak wood from Java in Indonesia, choosing teak because of its strength, density and high natural oil content. This means that the wood naturally repels moisture, which makes the furniture product more durable. All of Ethnicraft’s teak products are FSC certified, suggesting that the wood material used is sustainably sourced. Presently, Ethnicraft’s products are distributed by 1,200 retailers in more than 50 countries across the globe.
Ethnicraft’s showroom has moved to PJ
Now, the company has moved its showroom to PJ. The theme of this space is ‘industrial and minimalistic yet sophisticated’, say the design team. The new showroom space features an exposed celling, a polished concrete floor and metal pendant lamps.
There also exposed pipes and ducts, a nod towards structural and mechanical invention. The metallic detailing is to provide a ‘raw’ look and is a sharp contrast to the neutral tones of the wooden furniture.
All this is encompassed in a bright all-white space, claimed to create an ‘unfinished’ feeling that accentuates the detailed and refined furniture. This new showroom is located in Unit G.07 on the Ground Floor of Wisma Academy, on Jalan 19/1 in Petaling Jaya.
Furniture highlights
The product catalogue is separated into Bedroom, Kitchen and Dining, Living Room, Storage, Home Office and Accessories categories. Here are some of our favourite picks for each:
Burger Bed with Long Bedhead and Nightstands
The brilliantly-named Burger Bed comes in king or queen bed sizes and, as part of the Burger collection, has a ‘floating effect’ design to create the illusion of larger floor space.
For the ‘long’ model, the bedhead is neatly integrated with a nightstand or bedside table on either side. The model comes with adjustable positioning to suit the size of your mattress (up to a maximum thickness of 30.5cm), and the dark grey cover is removable and washable.
Pop Stool
In a shape roughly resembling a champagne cork, the 45-cm-high Pop Stool is actually designed by a Singaporean designer, Nathan Yong.
Pettersson Dining Table
The Pettersson Dining Table has an instantly-recognisable ‘twisted’ leg system and comes in sizes of 180, 200 and 220cm.
ET301 Sofa
With its distinct solid walnut wood legs and comfortable seats consisting a mix of down feather and foam, this Belgian linen upholstered sofa is a crowd-pleaser. This collection of sofa is available in several sizes and color options.
M Rack
Designed by in-house designer Alain van Havre, the M Rack was inspired by Dutch painter Piet Mondriaan’s work. The bookshelf, consisting of a pleasing mosaic of rectangular and square storage spaces, can be installed either vertically or horizontally.
Frame PC console
With a compact 120cm width, the Frame PC console is nifty and useful for small spaces. The two drawers, fitted with the company’s Blumotion soft closing technology, are perfect for your home office needs.
Billy Box and U-Shaped Desk
Another product with an intriguing name, the Billy Box is a storage unit made from 100% FSC-certified recycled teak. The box has three drawers that also run on the Blumotion system and is a good complement to the U-Shaped Desk, as an added storage option.
