The Carpet Connoisseur
One of the most important parts of interior design is the floorcovering. With both aesthetic and functional roles to play in the home, carpets deserve special attention.
When furnishing a home, there are many elements that homeowners need to consider in order to make their home as comfortable and welcoming as it can be, from the colours of the walls to the type of mood enhancers used, every element serves a purpose and can easily add the ‘wow’ factor to your home. Among the many elements that further enhance the look of a home is carpet.
The function of a carpet is not only to add beauty to a home, but it can also improve indoor air quality, reduce noise, cushion and soften falls as well as providing warmth during cooler days.
Whether you are in a shopping mall or taking a drive within Klang Valley, notice that there are many carpet stores selling some of their best wares, therefore settling for a beautiful carpet shouldn’t be a difficult chore.
Carpet-making is an art that was introduced by people a thousand years ago when they used animal skins to warm themselves, over the years, that art has evolved from animal skin to leaves and grass woven to become pile-less carpet.
Today, gone are the leaves, grass, and animal skins, in its place there are different types of carpets such as woven, knotted, tufted, and needle felt among others. The plethora of carpets that come in varying grades, designs, colours, styles, and materials provides homeowners the opportunity to pick some of the best carpets available for their homes. But if you are a novice to the benefits of carpet furnishing, and want to buy a carpet but don’t know where to start, head to Persian Collections, where some of the best Iranian handmade carpets are available.
Established in 1995, Persian Collections is the preferred choice of many locals and expats when it comes to carpeting, primarily because the quality of the carpets is outstanding and the service rendered by the owner, Reza Khani and team is unrivalled. Persian Carpets are made by hand, and the patience and skill that goes into every knot is almost beyond belief. The secret of their magnificence lies in the choice of material, the richness of the colour, the beauty of the design, and the number of knots per square meter. Reza explains that in Persia there are three types of carpets; City, Village, and Tribal, and each type has unique properties that sets it apart from carpets from different regions and parts of the world.
The City Carpet usually comes with 400,000 to 1 million knots per square meter; each knot takes approximately five seconds to weave. These carpets are often designed by famous designers and weaved using only silk or wool. The Village Carpet on the other hand is made by the locals based on the individual’s creativity and imagination, and it has less than 400,000 knots per square meter. Lastly, the Tribal Carpet, as it is called, is made by different tribes from Iran and features animals and geometric designs.
“As always we say, a carpet’s quality depends on the number of knots in a square metre, for city carpets 400,000 to 700,000 knots per square meter is average, while 200,000 to 400,000 knots per square meter is the average for tribal and village carpets,” he explained.
“Many customers are under the perception that a thick carpet is a mark of a good and quality carpet, but truth is a good carpet should be thin. The thinness is determined by the number of knots – the more knots the better,” he added with a smile. According to Reza, as Malaysia is blessed with a tropical climate, homeowners should opt for woollen carpets or wool-and-silk mixed carpets, but he advises homeowners to use an underlay to protect the carpet from having direct contact with the floor and recommends cleaning the carpets by sending it to professional carpet store every two years.
At Persian Collections, customers will not be disappointed or go home empty-handed as there are carpets of different sizes, colours, and types to suit every room of a house. “It doesn’t matter if you have a small or big house, at Persian Collections, there are carpets for every home, all anyone has to do is walk into our stores and have a chat with our friendly team who will be more than happy to assist them in buying a suitable carpet,” he said.
Some of Reza’s recommendations for different parts of the house are woollen carpet for heavy traffic areas such as the dining room and entrance, wool-and-silk mixed for the living areas, and silk carpets for areas that have less traffic, such as the bedroom. “I personally love the texture of a silk carpet, and it is best to be placed in the master bedroom as there is no better feeling than waking up in the morning and placing your feet on a silk carpet. The softness and feel is better experienced than described,” concluded Reza with a wink.
