Owned by a Malaysian couple, Kumar and Sandra, this house was a project long in the works. After drifting along for four years with a the original architect and contractor, the project finally picked up when Tony Heneberry of Two’s Company (formerly JTJ Design) was hired. With some new walls, windows, and external works, the bungalow now sits proudly on Gasing Hill.

An earthy feature in the guest bathroom is the polished concrete finish on the walls and floor that lends a contemporary feel to the space. The master bathroom received the same treatment with the added bonus of a contemporary bathtub in the same polished concrete.

The theme continues in the living room, which sports a polished-grey wall with a low shelf; and the kitchen, which has counter-tops of the same finish.

A lovely feature of this bungalow is the dip pool – also made with that polished cement – set against a vertical garden inside the front wall. The area out front was originally going to be a car park, but is now a highlight of the property.

The pool was designed around the water retention tank which features as a sort of deck. With water spouts from under the vertical garden and the gentle splashing of the water in the breeze, the occupants can hear the soothing sounds of flowing water throughout the house.

The water in the pool also exudes personality, thanks to the polished cement. Under water, the cement acquires a reflective quality which tends to pick up the ambient colours of the day – so a clear blue day makes the pool blue while an hazy day will result in the water looking turquoise as it reflects the green of the nearby landscape.
