F1 in Schools is a Design & Engineering competition in which student teams must produce a range of outcomes similar to that of a professional F1 racing team. All teams must race a CO2 powered car they designed using Computer Aided Design, create a team identity and uniforms, produce a written portfolio, and take part in a verbal presentation to a panel of judges. All materials and resources are to be organised by the teams, with all money raised by the students through fundraising and sponsorship. On 10th March, 152 Year 9 GIS students on 31 teams showcased their hard work from their 9 weeks’ Design Technology lessons.
The day was a fantastic success and saw a range of sponsors, parents, and special guests coming to have a look at the innovative work of our students. There were a range of prizes awarded with the top three teams being announced as ‘Mach VI’ in third place, ‘Diverse’ in second and the winners ‘Transcendent’. These teams will now move on to the SE Asian finals later this year for a chance to participate in theWorld Finals in 2017.
Principal Colter Watt commented, “One of the major advantages of the F1 project is that it is authentic learning where school work is similar to real life. Solving highly complex problems required the students to use teamwork, problem solving, research gathering, time management, and information synthesizing.”
