Pet owners in Malaysia will know the difficulties in renting, especially if you’re looking at finding an apartment or condominium. Akanksha Madiraju takes a look condominiums in KL that are-pet friendly.
Finding a new apartment to rent is not always an easy task. It is even more difficult in Malaysia when you are looking to move with your pets. Though ‘landed properties’ (low-rises such as houses and bungalows) allow you to have dogs and cats of all sizes without any issues, apartment buildings and condominiums in KL often have confusing rules. For instance, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall allows you to keep no more than one small dog that weighs less than 7 kg and /or a cat in your condo.
Also, technically, you need to get a license for your dog from the municipal council – for KL it’s Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) – as well as have it microchipped, and it needs to pass a canine training course before you can legally keep it with you, whether in a condo or landed property.
There is also a list of restricted breeds; the dogs on this list cannot be kept without a special permit. Some restricted breeds are Rottweillers, Dobermans, German Shepards, and Bull Mastiffs. There are also some breeds that are banned entirely, such as Pit Bull Terriers, American Bulldogs, Akita and a few others. That’s one reason breeds like Maltese, Poodles, Shih Tzus, Pomeranians, French Bulldogs and other such fluffy beasts are quite popular with condo dwellers here.

Be prepared to make a few calls to find the perfect apartment. It’s always a good idea to double check with the landlord, because, let’s face it, few of them love pets in their rental apartments. If you find yourself in a situation where the building allows pets but the landlord is hesitant, you can always offer a ‘pet deposit’ to cover the charges of any potential damage.
This reassures the landlord of the safety of his property and shows your confidence in your pooch and/or kitty. Now you can sit back, relax and enjoy your new home with your pet.
