In light of the ridiculous turn of events at Sepang Formula 1 Grand Prix this weekend (see point 1.), ExpatGo wanted to share a number of other occasions when foreigners got into hot water in Southeast Asia.
Strangely enough, all but one of these incidents involve some level of nudity. Being in Malaysia, a conservative country, you’d think visitors would know that stripping down in public would be considered indecent – as for most countries. But many of these visitors left very little to the imagination; indeed, in one case there was no need for imagination at all…
1. Australians strip down to Malaysian flag swimming trunks at F1 Grand Prix
Nine Australian spectators decided to celebrate their fellow Aussie, Daniel Ricciardo, winning at Sepang by stripping down to their ‘budgie smugglers’ – that’s what Australian’s call speedo-type swimming trunks.
The nine men then proceeding to dance around in celebration, draping an Australian flag around them and drinking beer from a shoe, according to The Guardian. The ‘shoey’, as it’s called, is apparently an Australian tradition. Even race winner Ricciardo drank champagne from his boot after receiving his trophy.
Celebrations took a sour turn, however, when the nine Aussie spectators were arrested for public indecency. They are currently being held while investigations are underpants – I mean, underway! One of them is said to be an advisor to a senior minister in Australia – we wonder who advised him to take his clothes off…
2. Chinese tourists take nude photos at Semporna, Sabah
In late October 2015, a group of tourists from China were having the time of their lives diving in Semporna, which is said to be one of the most beautiful dive spots in the region. They might have shocked some of the fishes when they turned up naked, though.
One of the photos, posted online, shows men standing in the shallow waters facing the open sea stark naked as they mooned the camera. Other photos includes creative positions to show that the men were indeed naked without entirely exposing their ‘camera-shy’ bodies.
There’s also a couple of photos of women in bikinis, sans-bikini top, with their backs to the camera in what looks like a victory stance, with one hand in the air. But the victory soon ended when the dive instructor was arrested shortly after the photos were posted online, as reported by Nanfang, and the police are investigating the identities of the others.
3. Western mountain climbers strip atop Mount Kinabalu, Sabah
After conquering the legendary Mount Kinabalu, a group of climbers proceed to dare each other to strip down to their birthday suits. Maybe it was the lack of oxygen from being 4,000 meters above sea level that led to this band of climbers to decide that stripping atop a cold mountain in a Muslim country was a good idea.
Despite being asked not to remove their clothes by their guide, one Canadian, one British, and two Dutch nationals laid bare their pale complexions for the world to see on 30th May 2015, as reported by CBS News.
Apart from breaking the law, the indecent behaviour also angered many locals to whom the mountain is a sacred place. It was this sacred belief that led to many locals blaming these four tourists for the major 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck just days after the incident, citing their behaviour as a desecration of the sacred site.
The four of them were fined RM5,000 each and served a few days in jail before being deported back to their respective countries.
4. Hong Kong model bungee jumps naked in Thailand
A Hong Kong tourist who says she’s a model, wanted to bungee jump at Chiang Mai.
As she was preparing to jump, she told the staff that she needed to film herself bungee jumping in a bikini for work, and they graciously agreed to allow her to do that.
However, according to a report on Nanfang, the 17-year old stripped down and jump before anyone could stop her.
Naturally, authorities and locals were outraged. She seems to have left Thailand before they could find her, but the bungee jumping facility manager was fined 1,000 baht for allowing this to happen.
5. Impatient expat and Pokemon Go fan fired in Singapore
Back in July, millions of avid Pokemon fans were outraged by the wait for the Pokemon Go app to be released in their countries, such as Malaysia and Singapore. One irate fan learned the hard way that patience is a virtue.
Sonny Truyen vented his frustration on his social media account calling Singapore a ‘freaking ship country’ (the uncensored version, obviously) because he just couldn’t wait to start the journey down memory lane and catch em’ all. According to New Straits Times Online, The Australian was criticised online by annoyed Singaporeans, but he continued his tirade by claiming that his was only there for work because Singapore ‘lacked talent’, with a couple more insults thrown in for good measure.
The locals then went ahead to find out where he worked and proceeded to flood the company’s social media page with complaints about him. On the same day, the CEO released an announcement to apologise for the offending behaviour and let everyone know that the expat was sacked. Truyen’s social media accounts seem to have been suspended; the only thing he has been hunting recently is a new job.
6. Mooning at Angkor Wat in Cambodia
According to Asian Correspondent, two sisters on holiday to Cambodia were caught taken pictures of their bare butts at the UNESCO World Heritage Site early last year. The sisters antics followed just a week after three Frenchmen were arrested for taking nude photos at the temple complex.
All the offenders were separately fined USD250 and were handed a suspended six-months suspension before being deported back to their home countries.
