The folks at FamilyBreakFinder went on a geeky rampage of the internet to find tourism slogans from around the world. Then they did what all great geeks do, they collated the data… into a map! From straightforward slogans like Malaysia’s ‘Truly Asia’ and Zambia’s ‘Let’s Explore’ to the wonderfully punny one liners like ‘Djibeauty’ (Djibouti) and ‘Much Mor’ (Morocco), the map gives an insight into how tourism boards around the world are trying to sell their country as an enticing holiday destination.
Of the 193 countries listed on the map, 38 countries didn’t seem to have a tourism slogan including North Korea and, surprisingly, Sweden. Several war-torn countries retained their slogans, including Syria (‘Always beautiful’) and Chad (‘Oasis of the Sahel’).
FamilyBreakFinder also fed their data into a word cloud generator to show which words were used the most in all the slogans:
Here’s what we’ve gathered from this map: the word ‘beautiful’ is the most popular adjective. It’s used in six different slogans. Also, marketing teams seem to love exclamation marks. There are 12 in total – Lithuania alone uses three; ‘See it! Feel it! Love it!’
In terms of strategy, three countries focused on happiness: Bhutan (‘Happiness is a place’), Fiji (‘Where happiness finds you’), and Denmark (‘Happiest place on Earth!’). It makes sense considering that these countries consistently rank highly on lists that rate happiness levels in countries in the world.
Other countries tap into their historical ties with slogans like ‘Where it all begins’ (Egypt), ‘Land of origins’ (Ethiopia), ‘Come to where it all started’ (Mozambique), ‘Heart of the Mayan World’ (Guatemala), and ‘Land of the Incas’ (Peru).
Unsurprisingly, many countries put their natural treasures front and centre to draw tourists — a sound strategy since nature has always been a major draw for many travellers. Tanzania simply lists the three biggest natural attractions in their slogan, ‘Land of Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar & the Serengeti’ and Romania wants tourists to ‘Explore the Carpathian Gardens’, while Switzerland’s slogan is a directive, ‘Get natural’.
Antigua & Barbuda and Belize opted for a slogans that teased a spectacular nature trip to each country with ‘The beach is just the beginning’ and ‘Mother Nature’s best kept secrets’ respectively.
Finally, Norway’s ‘Powered by nature’ and Dominica’s ‘The nature island’ are both concise and accurately represent a trip to those countries.
Some of these slogans are really creative and it definitely draws me in enough that I started researching travel options to those countries I would never have considered otherwise, like Djibouti. Which one is your favourite?
