A challenge was issued, training was given, and preparations were made, and on Friday, 17th February, the KYUEM Duke of Edinburgh Silver Qualifier Expedition began. Two intrepid groups of Silvers, with jungle guides and KYUEM staff, headed up a tough, deep-jungle trail over the hills from Kuala Kubu Bharu to Kampung Garachi Jaya, down the spectacular Sungai Selangor Dam road to a riverside camp near Kampung Pertak.
An early Saturday start saw the Silvers trekking the beautiful but tough rainforest trail up Bukit Kutu (1,059m). After fantastic views at the summit, despite exhaustion, blisters, sore legs, and mosquito bites, the Silvers trekked down the toughest trail yet – battling rattans, steep slopes, and leeches galore to camp at PieRose Swiftwater HQ.
On Sunday, one group took the option to trek up to the spectacular Lata Medang waterfall and back to finish at PieRose’s rafting HQ. The remaining group took up the greater challenge: whitewater rafting on Sungai Slim, which was incredible, with high rainfall producing swift, powerful currents causing the rafts to plunge and plummet at the rocks. Many fell out and were quickly rescued by the capable rafting guides, but a great time was had by all and a successful Qualifier achieved!
