Music in Malaysia is a diverse as the people who produce them. From classic favorites like the Alleycats, hip hop legends Too Phat, and rockstars Bunkface; there is no shortage of talent in every generation. Here are some faces set to make their mark in the new era of local music.
Talitha Tan
Blazing through the indie jazz pop scene, Talitha Tan has already captured many hearts with her sentimental and relatable melodies. Don’t let her young age fool you, she has been dabbling in the industry for over six years since starting out on Youtube in 2011. Growing from influences like Kina Grannis and Tyler Ward, Talitha’s potential shows no signs of slowing down.
Macropsia
A side project of Lee Williams, sound engineer and producer, with Froya, veteran to the Malaysian music industry, Macropsia is one of the most eclectic bands ever to grace the electronica scene. Psychedelic vibes are their trademark, and Malaysia’s most popular music festival – Good Vibes, keeps them in the loop for good reason. Their haunting remixes are worth replaying and only serves to prove their versatility in the scene.
+2dB
Stylising two decibels, +2dB has been a popular presence in the club scene of Malaysia’s joints. The two Djs and vocalists have come a long way since their ‘Dark Electronica’ origins and have been the opening acts for many international stars such as TOKiMONSTA and CHVRCHES. They have even embarked on their own tour in Korea and continue to make appearances at local festivals like Urbanscape.
Bihzhu
Bubbly and soulful, Bihzhu sets herself in preserving the richness of the folk melodies of Malaysia. With a resonating voice, she easily makes jazz, reggae, and pop a whole new experience for inspiration and relaxation. The music industry is more than just a hobby for her; as she also dedicates herself to building a platform showcasing local talents.
SonaOne
The protégé of vetrean star Joe Flizzow, SonaOne is the face of Malaysia’s newest generation of the hip hop scene. Hip hop in Malaysia has always been a grey area in terms of expressiveness, but SonaOne remains a strong presence with his references to family, life and honesty. With a background of producing, hosting, graffiti painting, and touring the world, SonaOne has no shortage of areas he can reach.
Evelyn Feroza
In just half a decade of performing pop, R&B, soul, jazz and rock covers all over KL, Penang, and across Asia, Evelyn ended 2018 on a high note by dropping her first solo single called ‘Close Your Eyes.’ Available on YouTube, iTunes and Spotify, this is just the beginning of a remarkable career for this powerhouse songstress. Collaborating with Marques Young from Q sound, ‘Close Your Eyes’ is already on our local airwaves, namely Hitz and Fly FM, and there is more to come in the new year. Catch her performing next with Rainbow Children in their Prince tribute band at No Black Tie, Valentine’s Day 2019.
