Saturday, September 28 will see the return of the KL Highland Games at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort (on the Polo Field). This will be the ninth gathering organized by the Selangor St Andrews Society, and once again, it’s a great opportunity to celebrate Scottish culture with our hosts here in Malaysia, as well as with the many expats and tourists who will appreciate a taste of Scotland so far away from home.

The Scottish Highland Games hold a rich history that spans centuries and are an integral part of Scottish culture. These games originated in the Scottish Highlands to showcase the strength, skill, and endurance of the clansmen. Over time, they have evolved into a blend of traditional sporting events, cultural celebrations, and community gatherings.

The Highland Games typically take place between May and September, with numerous events held across Scotland and also in various parts of the world. These games attract a wide range of participants and interested spectators, who come to witness the spectacle and immerse themselves in all things Scottish.

The Games also feature the famous ‘Scottish Heavy Events,’ which consist of a variety of competitions that test the physical prowess and agility of participants. The most iconic event is the caber toss, where athletes attempt to flip a long wooden caber end over end. The other events are Shot Put, Weight for Distance, Hammer and Weight for Height.

Music also plays a significant role in the Highland Games. Bagpipe bands perform in competition with one another, often engaging in friendly competitions, mesmerizing spectators with their powerful tunes and synchronized marching. For many, the highlight of the Highland Games is when all the musicians play together and provide the audience with the fabulous experience we call the Massed Pipe Band.

Throughout the day, and into the evening, F&B vendors will provide a wide selection of Scottish and local Malaysian cuisine. There will be a wide selection of booths, catering for, amongst others, face painting, arts and crafts, local organizations and societies. As the Games come to an end, the evening carries on with music and dancing.

All in all, the Scottish Highland Games represent a unique blend of athletic skills, cultural heritage, and community spirit. They continue to captivate audiences worldwide, serving as a testament to the enduring traditions and pride of Scotland’s past and present.

The KL Highland Games 2024 promises to be the biggest event yet, run by the Selangor St Andrews Society, and supported by volunteers, and above all, the KLHG sponsors. Ultimately, the aim is to provide the best day out for all who attend and participate, and in doing so, generate much needed funds to support charities who are most in need.

Further information on this event can be found on the Selangor St Andrews Society Facebook, Instagram, and website.
