The 21st Royal Langkawi International Regatta Kicks Off in Late January

With nearly three dozen sailing yachts and over 250 participants, the annual event is set for a week of memorable racing and other events.

The Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR) is poised to celebrate its 21st edition from January 20 to 25, 2025. Hosted by the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club, this prestigious event has become a cornerstone in the Asian sailing calendar, attracting a diverse fleet of yachts and an international cadre of sailors.

This year’s edition will welcome no less than 32 sailing yachts from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, China, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Australia, with more than 250 participants. The regatta aims to establish Malaysia and Langkawi as a prominent sailing destination while promoting sailing and boosting sports tourism.

The sailors will once again this year compete in six classes, namely Racing, IRC 1, IRC 2, Multihull, Sports Boat, and Club. The winner of each class will be awarded with the following prestigious trophies: Prime Minister’s Challenge Trophy (Racing Class), LADA-IRC Challenge Trophy (IRC 1 Class), PSC-IRC 2 Challenge Trophy (IRC 2 Class), Langkawi Sports Trophy (Sports Boat Class), Malaysia Multihull Challenge Cup (Multihull Class), and RLYC Commodore’s Challenge Cup (Club Class).

Since its inception, the RLIR has garnered acclaim for its challenging courses set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Andaman Sea. The regatta’s mission is to deliver competitive and enjoyable racing experiences for all participants, regardless of their yachts’ design or vintage.

The 2025 regatta anticipates a wide array of participants, from high-performance racing yachts to classic cruisers. The event is structured to accommodate various classes, ensuring equitable competition across the board.
