Soka International School Malaysia (SISM) continues to grow as a nurturing and inclusive learning environment, championing value-creation education and preparing students to become genuine learners and global citizens.
Since its launch, Soka International School Malaysia (SISM) has grown into a dynamic and nurturing learning environment under the leadership of Dr. Wendy Yee Mei Tien. Having served as Principal for nearly 17 months, she has guided the institution through its formative stages, ensuring that its philosophy of value-creation education remains at the heart of its mission.
Dr. Wendy’s leadership embodies the very principles she advocates. “My journey in this role has been humbling, challenging, and immensely rewarding,” she shares. “Leading a new institution comes with unique trials, from establishing a strong foundation to shaping a culture that aligns with the philosophy of Soka Education. However, witnessing the growth of our students, the dedication of our educators, and the unwavering support of our community has been truly inspiring.”

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES, CELEBRATING DIVERSITY
Leading an international school comes with its own set of challenges, particularly in managing the diverse expectations of students, parents, and educators from various cultural backgrounds. Navigating these differences can be complex, but Dr. Wendy views this as one of SISM’s greatest strengths. “This diversity is what makes SISM special—it prepares students to thrive in a global society by fostering understanding, adaptability, and mutual respect.”
This commitment to inclusivity is reflected in the school’s culture, which is built on the foundation of GREAT—Grit, Respect, and Appreciation. “Respect is the cornerstone of inclusivity; it enables students to acknowledge and value different perspectives, beliefs, and ways of life. Appreciation goes a step further, encouraging students not just to tolerate differences but to find value and meaning in them. Grit is also crucial, as embracing diverse perspectives and working harmoniously with people from different backgrounds requires resilience, open-mindedness, and perseverance.”

WHAT SETS SISM APART?
Many international schools in Malaysia offer strong academic programs, but what truly distinguishes SISM is its commitment to Soka Education. “At the heart of our philosophy is value creation—ensuring that education empowers students to unlock their full potential and lead meaningful, contributive lives,” Dr. Wendy explains. “Our goal is not just academic success, but holistic development, where students cultivate wisdom, resilience, and a deep sense of social responsibility.”
NURTURING GENUINE LEARNERS AND GLOBAL CITIZENS
SISM’s motto, “Be Genuine Learners, Be Global Citizens,” encapsulates the school’s vision. “To be genuine learners means to cultivate a lifelong love for learning—not just for the sake of acquiring knowledge, but for continuous self-improvement and meaningful contribution to society. A genuine learner is someone who is curious, self-motivated, and willing to challenge their own limits. They do not learn simply to pass exams but to develop wisdom, critical thinking, and the ability to apply knowledge in real-life situations.”
Equally important is the development of global citizenship. “In today’s interconnected world, success is not measured solely by personal achievements but by one’s ability to contribute to the greater good. We strive to nurture individuals who are not only intellectually capable but also empathetic, ethical, and socially responsible.”

LOOKING AHEAD: THE FUTURE OF SISM
Dr. Wendy is optimistic about the future of SISM and the exciting initiatives on the horizon. “We are expanding our pre-university programs, increasing student participation in academic competitions, and launching leadership and community service projects to foster a spirit of excellence and social responsibility.”
As SISM continues to evolve, its core mission remains steadfast: to empower students with the knowledge, resilience, and ethical foundation to lead meaningful lives. “Ultimately, our goal is to shape the leaders of tomorrow—individuals who will inspire change, uphold truth, and create a brighter future for all.”
