There is nothing closer to an edible hug than a meal at a local curry house, and the warm welcome from manager Prakash and his father when we arrived at their banana leaf joint in Subang was enough to ensure that the food was going to be made by people who care.

Ammache Curry House was the product of a problem faced by two friends. Prakash and Suraeisan were frustrated at the lack of good eateries near their offices. “Let’s just start one,” Prakash muttered. Fast forward some time and here they are, marking the first anniversary of their own restaurant.

While the lunchtime rush is for the banana leaf set, the menu orders a range of South Indian food. While the usual dishes of similar eateries are available, it doesn’t take long to realise that Ammache offers a special touch that makes the food unique. Dishes such as the claypot mutton chop in a garlic sauce are personal creations, while the marinade used to make the fried chicken is a family secret. “All our staff. are South Indian, but my father and I add in recipes too,” explains Prakash. “Food is important to our family, so we make sure we offer the best.”

The family theme is an important one. The father-son duo create a welcoming environment for families to eat together at the weekends.

Ammache offers an ideal pick-me-up. No matter how large or small a meal you desire, there is something that will hit the spot.
