Kelantan Still Keen to Implement Hudud Laws

The opposition party, PAS, seems to be increasing the pressure to introduce Hudud laws in Kelantan, the northeastern state they control. PAS is part of the opposition coalition, although DAP – another key party in the coalition – has threatened to leave if they go through with the implementation.

The Hudud laws cover very specific offences which are stated in the Quran and are considered crimes against God. They include adultery, theft, drinking alcohol, and apostasy. The punishments for each crime are also prescribed, but there are many people around the world who consider them too extreme for the 21st century.

The Malaysian government agreed to set up a technical committee to study the proposed implementation. PAS states they will restrict the application of these Islamic laws to Muslims, although some have expressed concern that the ultimate goal is to make them applicable to everyone. Hudud laws cannot be implemented without approval by Parliament, however, and that may well be denied.

Once they start practicing these laws, most politicians will no longer be with us
