4G services are slowly gaining traction in Malaysia. It is the fastest mobile internet service currently available and will appeal to those who want to enjoy lag free mobile TV, music streaming, cloud services, video, or social networking. U Mobile launched 4G LTE services on 17 December 2013 in some locations in Johor Bahru and Klang Valley.
Features of U Mobile’s 4G service
The company is claiming that its 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) service is capable of delivering speeds of up to 75mbps. Actual speed however, will depend on where the service is used, the device it is being used on and the number of customers who are using the service concurrently, in the location. So in reality, average speed will vary between 10mbps and 30mbps.
U Mobile is offering a number of post paid, pre paid and broadband plans on its 4G LTE network. Until January 31, the company is also offering package deals on the LTE service. The service will be bundled with a number of devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Sony Xperia Z1, Sony Xperia Z, HTC One and others.
As of now, the coverage of the service is very limited and it is available only in Subang Jaya, Puchong, Bandar Sunway, Berjaya Times Square and Johor Bahru’s Taman Molek. Acting CEO and COO of U Mobile, Wong Heang Tuck said that expanding the 4G network was the company’s top priority and that there will be substantial progress in the next few quarters.
Hindrances to the service
In order to enjoy U Mobile’s 4G services, you must have a compatible mobile phone, opt into the service by sending a text message (LTE ON) to 28118, sign up for a tariff plan and should ensure that you are in the coverage area.
Even if you are in the service area and you have activated a plan, it is possible that you may not be able to use the service. For instance, the service is not available on phones that do not support the 2600 Mhz spectrum. This includes many iPhones and iPads. But if you have an iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S, iPad Air or iPad Mini (retina display) you can use the service. Check your phone’s specifications to see the spectrum it is capable of using.
